We always assumed based on the name that this was some type of Paleo diet place with meat and veggies. On the contrary, Palio is full on Italian with pizza, pasta, etc. They have a nice build your own pasta option and plentiful choices of seafood, chicken, and more.
The food was excellent with generous portions. We loved the ambiance. Good energy that was a perfect start to the weekend. Reservations recommended - they had quite a wait on a Friday night before a football game.
Apart from the slightly crowded atmosphere, the quality of the service and food had me fooled into thinking this might be especially pricey Italian food. They must have let the pasta sit in the sauce for some minutes before serving, as it seemed like I could pick up on every little flavour. I am extremely satisfied about my experience here, and I thank management, kitchen staff, and server Kasey for such a fantastic experience.
Been to Palios multiple times and you really have two options when it's warm out. Eat on the roof and have a smaller menu that's not as good or go downstairs and have an amazing meal.
Either way it's a win, because the atmosphere on the roof is so cool. Also they have amazing sangria. We unfortunately and fortunately came on game night. Fun atmosphere, especially after a win for University of Michigan, but whenpeople exit the stadium with a hunger to celebrate at the wonderful eateries along main street, it's a kind madness of hustling and bustling to get in and get seated anywhere before pm. Madeline, the hostess, was gracious to put us on a waiting list. There were 5 in our party which can be harder to accommodate, so patience was a must for us even in the rain that we had to endure, walking from restaurant to restaurant to see about getting in sooner than pm.
Our persistence paid off. We got in at pm and boy were we ready for something warm and delicious. We started with a small margarita pizza to have as an appetizer and added to it some prosciutto that calmed our tummies to begin the rest of our meal. We all ordered the stuffed veal tortelacio with a creamy shiatake sauce and wilted spinach that we all agreed was a 5 star dish.
Italian, not paleo - palio
I had the same, but instead of the creamy shiatake sauce I substituted it with their bolonese sauce. I'm a red sauce girl! Nicely full, we topped our dinner with some carrot cake that came stacked in a 4 layered, too sugared frosting in between the layers, serving enough for 2 to 3 people to taste. The vanilla ice cream was too small a portion- literally a tablespoon on the plate.
We'll be back to eat on the rooftop some warm afternoon or evening because that's another experience at Palio I've yet to try and that Paul speaks so highly of. Overall, we were happy with our evening and give Palio a thumbs up! Love, Doctors' Choice Coffee. While it is difficult to find parking in downtown Ann Arbor during university move in week, we persevered based on a recommendation to try this restaurant.
The atmosphere was delightful and the wait staff were very attentive.
The feel of Italy was very present. Our waiter helped us to understand how to manage the menu they use iP and soon had our order in the que. The food was delivered in a timing that was perfect for our group of 4 to have a great evening of conversation. The main course 1 parmigiani and 3 salmon griglia was fantastic and much better than the iPad could present. Absolutely on my list for a return visit to Ann Arbor.

Named for the famous horse race that runs yearly through Siena, Italy, a record is even kept of the race's winners on a mural along the back dining room wall. During summer, Palio boasts Ann Arbor's largest and most popular outdoor gathering spot on its rooftop patio - Palio Del Sole.
Offering the best view of Ann Arbor's energetic downtown nightlife, Palio Del Sole is fully equipped with its own cucina and offers a unique menu that is completely different from Palio downstairs. There simply is no better Al Fresco dining experience on a warm summer evening in Ann Arbor.
