French explained the dating process and how the data is gathered. Before the event, students are required to fill out an eligibility form.
Held over Zoom, the first event features a large group of participants which are divided into breakout rooms where a series of four-minute dates occur. Following the series of dates, students fill out a post-date survey in which students select with which participants they would choose to pursue another date. After the dates, the research team follows up with students by sending them a survey once a week for four weeks following their first date to track how their relationship progresses.
Their questions aim to understand how the relationship is developing and whether both students have stayed in touch since their first date.
If the students have stayed in touch or have started dating, more questions ensue, many focusing on the emotional development of that relationship. French explained that most studies on the subject have conducted research concerning hypothetical relationships or recruited subjects who were already in relationships.
The study also seeks to understand how people make decisions about continuing to pursue certain relationships when choosing between multiple partners. In addition to looking at relationships through a new lens, this study has provided undergraduate psychology majors with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field.

Lindsay Bolton, FSU junior and undergraduate manager for the virtual speed dating project, elaborated on her favorite part of working on the project. Bolton encouraged freshman psychology majors to look into getting involved in Directed Individual Studies DIS to gain opportunities to participate in research projects like the virtual speed dating events.
An anonymous freshman student who participated in the virtual speed dating events described it as a very positive experience as she was able to meet new people and gain more confidence talking to strangers.
She also believes there is probably a greater success rate of actually maintaining contact after the initial date through the virtual speed dating process. Following her virtual date, she went on an in-person date with her match. Editor's Note: The names of participants in the virtual speed dating study were omitted in order to maintain the integrity of the study.
